Yet no one witnessed exactly how Ed Leedskalnin, a 100-pound Latvian immigrant, managed to quarry, carve, and precisely stack these megalithic stones into place all on his own. Pretty impressive to imagine this petite man single-handedly completing such a monumental feat!
Set on over 11 acres near Homestead, Coral Castle now operates as an historic site and unique tourist attraction. You can explore the property and marvel at Ed’s handiwork up-close. See the centerpiece castle tower, tables and chairs made of stone, planetary sundial, and a stone gate that even engineers can’t explain how Ed brought in unassisted. The place seems frozen in another era – like an relic of old Florida before the theme parks and high rises.

As an English speaker, I only pick up bits and pieces of the poems being recited. But the passion of the words transcends any language barriers. This is an artistic community coming together to share profound ideas, political discourse, and creative self-expression. Even though you only understand snippets, the experience feels strangely moving.
Between acts, songs by Latin legends like Celia Cruz and Tito Puente play while regulars and first-timers mingle over mojitos and empanadas. End your evening dancing salsa downstairs to live bands while contemplating the thought-provoking words that flowed earlier upstairs.
